The Growing Importance of Fraud Prevention in High-Volume OTAs

Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) process billions of dollars in bookings daily. Unfortunately, the high value of travel tickets and the digital nature of delivery make them prime targets for card-not-present (CNP) fraud and account takeover (ATO) attacks.
Fighting Chargeback Abuse
A major pain point for OTAs is chargeback abuse—often referred to as ‘friendly fraud’—where a customer books a trip, takes the flight, and then claims they did not make the purchase. OTAs are left to pay the dispute fees and refund the booking cost.
To combat this, modern travel sites are deploying AI-based risk scoring models that analyze behavioral data (like booking speed, device ID, IP location, and time of booking) to block fraudulent bookings before they are sent to the payment gateway.
